In the ceremony of Baptism the priest says to the child that the whole Christian Community welcomes him/her with great joy. ‘In it’s name I claim you for Christ our saviour by the sign of the cross and I invite your parents and godparents to do the same’. The priest and family then make a sign of the cross on the baby’s forehead.
I remember as a child that my mother blessed us with holy water every night as we went to bed. Holy water, a reminder of our baptism; that we belong to the Christian family and we belong to Christ. From the day my own kids were born I continued that tradition of signing them with the cross as they lie in their beds and I kiss them goodnight.
